Making money in a down economy

Some people believe making money in a down economy is hard. Sure, it can be, but if you have the will-power and dedication you will succeed. I would like to talk more about making money online.

Have you ever tried to make money while working from home? Getting paid to just sit around and basically do nothing. It's not impossible, you just have to have the motivation and the desire to want to make money. You can't allow yourself to procrasinate. I want to get into more detail about procrasination and what part it can play into you earning money.

If you see yourself procrastinating on a project, chances are that’s a symptom of fear.

Think about it: what sort of things projects cause procrastination? Usually things we don’t like, such as studying for an exam, doing the dishes, or some other household job.

Rarely do we procrastinate on something fun, like going out to eat or getting together with friends. So it makes no sense to procrastinate on something like working on your business, because this could be the key to your dreams (and besides, the “work” is fun!).

Ahhh …but there’s the catch: it could be the key to your dreams. Could be. And that’s why you procrastinate – because sometimes it’s a lot easier to dream the dream, because there is no chance of failure if we never try. It’s safe.

Of course on some level we realize that our procrastination is just a stalling tactic we use to avoid the possibility of having our dreams crushed (or for those with a fear of success, it works to keep us from having our dreams realized). So we make excuses to help us rationalize our procrastination.

Listen, this may be a little rough to hear, but I’m going to say it: there aren’t any valid excuses. Making excuses is just a way to feel good about the fact that you’re choosing failure. Yes, I said choosing. Because if you’re making excuses for yourself, that’s exactly what you’re doing.

So stop making excuses why you can’t succeed. Instead, look at reasons why you CAN succeed!

For example, are you the one with the family, the full time job, and very little time? I bet you can squeeze out one hour per week to work on your business, can’t you? And I’m even willing to bet that if you really wanted to, you could find one hour per day.

It’s all about priorities. It’s all about whether you’re going to choose to be successful …or choose to make excuses to not even get started. Your choice.

Sometimes procrastination isn’t an issue, and we find ourselves hitting the ground running. We’re learning quickly, applying what we’ve learned, and in general taking a lot of action. Things are getting done. It’s a very exciting time.

Then in the last stretch of a project, we stumble. Suddenly we start pulling back. We look at everything with a critical eye: the article isn’t good enough to publish, the blog isn’t good enough to show to the public, the product is crap, the sales letter just won’t do.

And so we go back to work, re-working everything to make it – well, perfect. We even give ourselves a little pat on the back for doing such quality work, and for having such an extraordinary attention to detail.

Sure, taking pride in our work and delivering high-quality products are things that can make us proud. But if we take it too far – if we become perfectionists in the extreme – we’re actually hindering rather than hurting our business. Because if nothing is ever good enough, than you’re not even taking a chance.

Your business will never launch. You’ll never finish a product. You’ll never even get one customer.

“But I need to deliver the best I can deliver for my customers!” you say.

True, you SHOULD be delivering high-quality products and services. But if perfectionism is keeping you from delivering anything at all, then you have a problem.

Do you think it’s unheard of for big businesses to put out products that could use a little improvement? Of course not! Look at Microsoft Windows. Every time they put out a new version of their operating system, they almost immediately release patches and updates to improve the product.

Take a look at the car you’re driving right now. Almost every year auto makers improve on their current models, even if it’s as simple as adding a few more cup holders.

Here’s the interesting thing: in many cases, putting the product on the market actually accelerates the time it will take to make improvements. Why? Because the business owner is getting real feedback from the only people who count – the customers.

You see, you could sit around for months tweaking your product, but you don’t know if those tweaks actually are making your product better. The only way to tell for sure is get it out in front of customers and let them tell you what improvements they’d like to see.

The same goes for every other part of your business. Your opinion is not nearly as valuable as allowing customers to vote with their wallets. It’s the only feedback that really counts.

For example, you might spend weeks tweaking your sales letter to try to make it convert better before your launch, but the only way to truly test it is to put it in front of customers. Period. It’s the only way to get a definitive answer that’s backed with statistics, not opinions.

Bottom line? Get your ads and products out there asap, and let the market tell you how to improve them. It’s a much more effective and faster way versus going on opinion alone.

And if you still can’t let go of your perfectionism? Then you need to sit down and figure out what exactly is holding you back – what fear – because identifying it is the first step in getting rid of it forever.
